Similar to the lecture Biomechanics II, the overarching topic of this course is (skeletal) muscle with some of its characteristics and properties that are of interest in biomechanics. In this context, we will also deal with lever arms, moments of force, and free body diagrams. Time-permitting, we will also look into muscle modelling. Here, in the seminar, the students will actively approach these topics with, e.g., practice problems, reading and discussing scientific papers, time in the laboratory.

In this lecture, I will try to provide a multidisciplinary, multilevel perspective on human motor control (and learning). Despite the multifaceted nature of connecting psychology, human movement science and neuroscience, I hope to achieve a certain degree of coherence in addressing the core problems of human motor control. More specifically, I will focus on
- how specific movements are selected
- how selected movements are planned in advance
- how executed movements are modulated by incoming perceptual information
- how existing movements are adapted and novel movements are acquired

In the Measurement Projects in Movement Analytics profile module, the knowledge and skills acquired in the first two semesters are applied and deepened. You will develop a concept for answering a question from the field of movement analysis. To do this, you must decide which movement characteristics are relevant, how these can be recorded, and which data processing and analysis steps are required to determine and appropriately illustrate meaningful characteristic values. You will develop the measurement setup, carry out measurements to determine reliability and validity as well as pilot measurements in order to be able to run preliminary results to answer the questions. Finally, the project is documented in writing and presented and discussed in a presentation.

[Si] Lecture Optional Module II: Introduction to Materials Science for Human Biomechanics (MA-HMA-13)
regelmäßiger Termin ab 07.11.2025
zwei-wöchentlich Fr. 10:00 - 12:00 Uhr | Online
nächster Termin: 17.10.2025 Uhr, Raum: Kugelberg 62, Seminarcontainer, 2 |
The aim of this module is to provide an overview of the range of materials from classical engineering materials to biomedical materials and the biomaterials of the human body (bones, tendons, muscles, etc.). The different classes of materials are introduced together with a discussion of their respective properties and characteristics, highlighting the differences between classical materials and biological materials. In order to gain a deeper understanding of materials science, the main characterisation techniques for structural and mechanical analysis as well as fabrication techniques will be presented, with particular focus on the peculiarities of biological samples and their testing. Special emphasis will be given to the increasingly widespread and industrially used techniques of 3D computed tomography (CT) for structural analysis, digital image correlation (DIC) for locally resolved motion and strain analysis, finite element simulations (FEA) as a powerful numerical method and additive manufacturing tools for materials fabrication.

(for an English description, see below)
This course is a practical introduction to conducting neuroscientific experiments using electroencephalography (EEG). The specific focus of this practical course is learning how to decode visual contents that participants were presented in a computer experiment from their brain activity using classifier algorithms. Participating students have to conduct an EEG experiment themselves and learn how to preprocess EEG data and program the decoding analyses in MATLAB.
