wöchentlich Mi. 14:00 - 16:00 Uhr | k.A.
nächster Termin: 22.10.2025 Uhr, Raum: k.A. |
[Si] Individual and socio-economic rights: A comparative perspective
The aim of this seminar is to analyze the differences and interconnections between individual rights and socio-economic rights from a comparative legal perspective.
During the course, participants will explore how various legal systems recognize, interpret, and enforce both categories of human rights. Particular emphasis will be placed on comparing the legal approaches in selected countries, especially European Union states. Both the common features and the key differences will be discussed, from the perspectives of legal theory and judicial practice.
The seminar seeks to demonstrate that, although civil and political rights have traditionally been regarded as “negative” rights (requiring the state to refrain from interference), and socio-economic rights as “positive” rights (requiring active measures and services by the state), modern legal systems increasingly acknowledge their interdependence and complementarity.
The final objective is to prepare a written paper in the form of a comparative legal analysis, presenting how these rights function in at least two different legal systems, including the legal system of the student’s home country.

SDG 10 – Weniger Ungleichheiten

Postcolonial economics is an interdisciplinary field that examines the economic consequences and legacies of colonialism, focusing on how colonial histories continue to shape economic structures, development trajectories, global inequalities, and power relations in formerly colonized countries. It merges insights from economics, history, political science, and postcolonial theory. It critically examines how colonial histories and power dynamics continue to shape global economic structures, development policies, and knowledge production in economics today. The reference book for this seminar is Postcolonialism Meets Economics, edited by Zein-Elabdin and Charusheela (2004). The book is recognized and praised as one of the first to systematically engage postcolonial theory with economics, while before its publication, disciplines on both sides, economics and postcolonial studies, were neglecting their links in the modern world. During this seminar, participants learn about the concept and ontology of postcolonialism/postcoloniality, the postcolonial aspects of mainstream economics and its representative institutions (e.g., the International Monetary Fund), the connections between postcolonialism and political economy structures, and readings on economics as a postcolonial hegemony.

[Si] Artificial intelligence and the democratic public sphere
regelmäßiger Termin ab 14.10.2025
wöchentlich Di. 18:00 - 20:00 Uhr | k.A. (Veranstaltung findet digital statt ; Event takes place digitally)
nächster Termin: 21.10.2025 Uhr, Raum: k.A. |
Artificial intelligence, especially large language models, which can be found in many digital applications, including social media apps, is omnipresent – and usually without us realizing it. Discussions in the political public sphere are now clearly influenced by them, with the visualization of certain political content, but also doxxing, swarming and other forms of discrimination and agitation playing an increasing role. The seminar aims to explore the question of what is meant by a functioning democratic public space, how AI programs can be understood and how technical tendencies influence democratic processes.
[Si] Environmental Justice

The unequal distribution of environmental benefits and harms produced by modern capitalist production remains one of the most pressing societal challenges of our time, giving rise to “environmental justice” as a topic of socio-political mobilization and a theoretical concept in social science for analyzing (re-)distribution, mobilization, representation, and political participation. Environmental justice focuses on the nexus between social discrimination and environmental burdens affecting groups such as poor communities, racial minorities, children, and indigenous peoples, and highlights demands for equal environmental protection.
Today, environmental justice is central to challenges in areas such as food, agriculture, climate change, water, and land use. It is actively adopted by social movements addressing disproportionate environmental harms, mobilizing against threats like polluted environments, and advocating for fair access to environmental goods. Simultaneously, environmental justice has been integrated into governance arrangements at multiple levels. As a theoretical perspective, environmental justice enables reflection on local mobilizations and global connections while contextualizing key questions through frameworks like post-colonial theory, social movement theory, and environmental governance studies.
In the course, following an introduction to the foundations, history, and definitions of environmental justice, several key questions are assessed: How are environmental benefits and harms distributed, and what dependencies, inequalities, and conflicts result? How do environmental conflicts and struggles over resources manifest? What justice claims are mobilized, and how are they expressed? What power dynamics and social structures perpetuate environmental inequality? What mechanisms address or resolve conflicts related to environmental justice?
Students will analyze case studies demonstrating environmental inequalities across various issues, regions, and communities. The results of the group work will be presented, discussed, and commented on during two mandatory block seminar sessions on January 31, 2026 and February 7, 2026.

[P Si] Sociology of the Future
Open for VEEP and EUPeace, Nachhaltigkeitsbezogene Veranstaltung

The relatedness of societies towards the future cannot be taken for granted. It rather is a characteristic of modernity which conceptualizes the future as open horizon of infinite dynamics, plannings, and designs. This affects economic as much as political agency and individual biographies. Hence, the future has developed into one of the core variables of society and sociation. At the same time, the future remains unknown, is hard or simply not predictable and, thus, invariably remains risky. This class reflects on approaches towards the future from the social sciences and cultural studies.

wöchentlich Do. 10:00 - 12:00 Uhr | digital
Yitzkor-Bücher erschienen in New York (2x), Buenos Aires, Melbourne und Jerusalem.

In this seminar we will aim to reconsider the history and conceptual framework for the study of Soviet dissent, focusing on the lesser-known resistance movements in Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and other national republics. While the Soviet history of dissent has traditionally been framed through the experiences of Russian intellectuals, in this course we will work with the sources and samizdat texts from the so-called Soviet peripheries. By this, we will attempt to question the dominant narratives and will further explore the diverse peripheral forms of cultural resistance under late Socialism that were often overlooked. By focusing on the transnational dimensions of dissent, we will delve into the interconnectedness of resistance practices across national boundaries, challenging the conventional understanding of "center-periphery" relations. This course will also ask about the persistence of these practices beyond the Cold War era and will address their continued relevance for modern-day resistance movements in Eastern Europe and beyond

[Si] The Gift in the Middle Ages: The Material Culture of Diplomacy in Times of Peace and War
regelmäßiger Termin ab 14.10.2025
wöchentlich Di. 12:00 - 14:00 Uhr | Phil. I, G 333
nächster Termin: 21.10.2025 Uhr, Raum: Phil. I, G 333 |
The Middle Ages were far more interconnected than is often assumed. Warfare, trade, pilgrimage, and diplomacy created dense networks of contact and exchange across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Within these frameworks, the practice of gift-giving – especially among political and religious elites – played a central role in shaping diplomatic, social, and religious relationships in times of peace and war. Far more than acts of generosity, medieval gifts were embedded in systems of reciprocity, obligation, and symbolic communication. Rulers and institutions exchanged valuable and often highly codified gifts to forge alliances, express loyalty, affirm hierarchies, seek favour, or to avoid war. In religious contexts, gift-giving served as an expression of devotion, penance, and memoria. The act of giving was thus never neutral: it was a performative gesture, rich in symbolic meaning and governed by cultural norms and expectations.
This seminar examines the functions, forms, and values of gifts in the medieval world. The concept is broadly defined to include tributes, bride gifts, and other structured exchanges. While our understanding of diplomacy and gift exchange in the Middle Ages relies heavily on written sources, the seminar will focus on the material culture of these transactions – on the surviving “material ambassadors” themselves, their designs, their meanings, and their donors.
