The course corresponds to the course "Empirische Wirtschaftsforschung und Ökonometrie" offered in the summer term in German. It focuses on VIP- and Erasmus students as well as on regular students who prefer English and/or a digital offer.
Participants should possess some basic knowledge about statistical concepts such as estimation of parameters and testing hypotheses. The course will introduce to basic concepts of applied economic research starting with a strong focus on data and preprocessing of data for further analysis. It will provide an introduction to multiple linear regression including testing of hypotheses on parameters and checking whether relevant assumptions are satisfied. The course will also introduce to the modelling of discrete dependent variables and to dynamic modelling, which eventually are used for forecasts. The exercises and additional material offered through Ilias should help the participants getting used to the application of these methods and, possibly, also to first own empirical analyses.

[Ü] "Discovering" and Charting the (New) World - Knowledge, Expedition and Exploration in Early Modernity (AfK-Nr. 11)
regelmäßiger Termin ab 25.10.2022
wöchentlich Di. 16:00 - 18:00 Uhr
nächster Termin: 07.02.2023, Raum: Online |
Today maps seem to be the primary way of understanding and imagining the world, their construction of space and borders shape the way we approach our surroundings and what we ‘know’ about them. This concept of space and the medial element of maps, as well as written descriptions of the space ‘discovered’ and ‘explored’, played an important role in European colonialism all over the World, especially when it comes to the Americas and Oceania.
This course will look at the role of media and knowledge in the ‘explorations’ and expedition by Europeans from Columbus to Cook in Early Modernity (1500-1800), as well as the influences of these trips on what and how something can be ‘known’, and its effects on the way we think and act today.
To pass the writing of an essay or the holding of a presentation will be required, as well as regular participation in the discussions of the reading every week.
Due to the tie-in with the Virtual International Programme (VIP) this course will be held in english and online (via BBB on StudIP). This course will therefore allow international discussions on and insights in international historiography and academics.

nächster Termin: 06.02.2023, Raum: online |
This interactive series of lectures seeks to introduce you to the concepts of and issues in gender, sexuality, and diversity studies. The aim is to make clear how gender, sexuality, LGBTQIA+ rights, race, class, nationhood, migration status, and ableism have to be thought in conjunction with each other in order to understand and to trouble existing social hierarchies. In each session, we will relate an issue such as racial politics or trans rights to the U.S. American and/or the German cultural political context, paying particular attention to contentious issues in this American election year. The goal is to heighten our sensibilities for how we think and talk about and react to social hierarchies based on categories of identity.
The lecture series can be taken as part of your Anglophone Studies coursework and/or as the introduction to the Certificate in Gender, Sexuality, and Diversity. This certificate aims to give students the tools for understanding how gender and sexuality intersect with other areas of identity and social experience so as to combat continued forms of inequality in work and in their private lives. The certificate also adds a valuable extra qualification for those who wish to work in organizations and businesses committed to diversity (https://www.uni-giessen.de/faculties/f05/certificates/certificate-in-gender-sexuality-and-diversity).

The course is composed of workshops about the politics, historical context, ideology, standards of living and mass culture of SFRJ. By looking at the authentic sources from the observed period, the students learn about Yugoslavia through their own analysis and research. The course ends with a big “pub quiz”, allowing the students to compete amongst themselves, individually or in teams. The source material for the workshops are available in BCMS or translated to German and / or English, so previous knowledge of BCMS is not necessary.

1. The seminar is concerned with the interconnections of concepts, speech and performance in intellectual and cultural history. As a starting point selected works of Ukrainian philosopher Gregory Skovoroda (1722-1794) will be analyzed to examine the migration of concepts in time and space as building blocks of culture as a phenomenon of transformation. We will read Skovoroda in original language and all available translations; we are not so much interested in lingustics, but in the migration of concepts, which may be found in other media (painting, sculpture, architecture, dramatic plays), as well. Participiants are welcome to broaden the thematic range of the seminar according to their academic interests. The seminar aims at a close reading of Skovoroda's work together with its interdisciplinary contextualization to introduce theoretical and methodological approaches to cultural science.

This lecture course surveys the sounds of English, primarily those of American and British accents. The lecture focuses on the characteristic articulation of English sounds (esp. speech organs, sound classes, places and manners of articulation) as well as the systems used for the phonetic description of vowels and consonants. We will also have a look at phonemes and allophonic distribution, phonological processes and connected speech phenomena such as word stress and intonation. Attention is also paid to those areas of articulation that tend to be problematic for German speakers. Students will also learn to read and broadly transcribe English sounds using International Phonetic Association (IPA) transcription.

[Si] Re-Thinking Ukrainian Donbas in Fiction, Memoirs, and Visual Arts (digital, 16.30-19.30 every Friday between Oct 21 and Dec 9, 2022)
regelmäßiger Termin ab 21.10.2022
wöchentlich Fr. 16:30 - 19:30 Uhr
nächster Termin: |
Since the beginning of the war in Donbas in 2014, this border region has been a hot spot both in news coverage across the globe and on the battlefield. Along with this, a wide array of issues concerning the place of the Donbas on Ukrainian cultural map—from its entangled history to the significance of Russian culture or the complex relations between regional and national identity—came to the fore, esp. after the outbreak of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022.
In our online tandem seminar, we shall discuss how the image of the Donbas has been construed in culture, literature, and arts since the 19th century, how it developed afterwards, and what narratives this development has brought about. In so doing, we will try to overcome the stereotypic image of the Donbas as a “pro-Russian,” “pro-Soviet,” even “anti-Ukrainian” region and focus on its complex affiliation with the Ukrainian identity debates. Our prime goal is to look at the Donbas through the lens of the current Russian-Ukrainian war to observe how the older narratives about this Ukrainian region are being referred to, reproduced, instrumentalized, or revised in contemporary Ukrainian culture and in arts—and how this influences Ukrainian self-identifications under war conditions.
The tandem seminar, which will be held by Dr. Oleksandr Chertenko (JLU Giessen) and Dr. Olha Poliukhovych (NaUKMA Kyiv), is part of the project “Ukraine digital: Ukraine in its transcultural and transnational context” of the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (NaUKMA). The project is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD); funding is provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In the course of the seminar, we plan to invite an international expert on the topic to an online guest lecture and one or two other experts who will provide their insights into topics discussed during individual sessions.

The tandem seminar is held together by Prof. Wingender (JLU Giessen) and Prof. Kobchenko (NaUKMA Kyiv). Our tandem seminar deals with the complex research field of language and war. The seminar begins with the treatment of the methodical basics and the historical background. Thus, on the basis of a model of language conflict types we deal with the complex relationships of language and conflicts. This is followed by the historical background in form of a short overview of Ukraine’s history and its language policy.
The focus of the seminar is then on three thematic blocks:
1. Myths and narratives regarding the origin of the Ukrainian language, public opinions on Ukrainian language, stereotypes, propaganda;
2. Myths and narratives regarding the language situation in Ukraine, language laws, laws on education, propaganda with regard to the role of Russian in Ukraine;
3. Attitudes towards Ukrainian and Russian in Ukraine, changes in attitudes, current surveys and polls, language of cultural products, language as a means of Ukrainian battle, changes in word usage and word meanings, linguistic landscape.
The tandem seminar is part of the project “Ukraine digital: Ukraine in its transcultural and transnational context” of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU) together with the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (NaUKMA). The project is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In the frame of our tandem seminar we will invite an international expert on the topic to an online guest lecture.

[Si] Philosophy and Rhetorics. Skovoroda and the Migration of Cultural Concepts (digital)
regelmäßiger Termin ab 19.10.2022
