Kommentar/Beschreibung

This seminar examines migration between Türkiye and Germany as a historically layered and continuously changing transnational field. Beginning with labour recruitment under the 1961 recruitment agreement and the subsequent processes of settlement and family reunification, the course traces political and asylum migration, international student mobility, skilled migration, and the experiences of second and subsequent generations. Particular attention is given to the diversification of migration from Türkiye in recent years and to the continuities and differences between earlier and more recent forms of mobility.
A central concern of the seminar is how different migration pathways and legal positions shape people’s opportunities, uncertainties, identities, and future plans. We examine migration imaginaries and the idea of a “German Dream”; diaspora politics and Germany–Türkiye relations; citizenship and political participation across borders; international student and skilled mobility; the migration–development nexus; brain drain, brain gain and brain circulation; return and circular migration; and everyday forms of transnational belonging.
The seminar combines historical, political, sociological, socio-legal, and migration-studies perspectives. It moves between macro-level processes and migrants’ everyday experiences and also introduces methodological questions about how migration can be researched through interviews, migration biographies, statistics, and other forms of empirical material. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to connect theoretical concepts with concrete cases and to critically consider how mobility, citizenship, participation, development, belonging, and future-making unfold across national borders.
