Comment/Description

The late bell hooks (1952–2021) de-marginalized Black women’s voices and Black feminisms and critiqued the Whiteness, classism, and imperialism of her surroundings. Her “Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom” (1994) encourages educators to allow for dissent and forceful disagreement and reminds them that education is never neutral or apolitical. Allowing for controversy has to be the basis for resistance and activism, as well as overcoming convention. She developed an “oppositional gaze” to overcome the Whiteness of popular media (1992), and she understood love and community as a “practice of freedom” and a strategy for healing the self from oppression and internalized forms of discrimination (1994). We will use hooks’s writings as a template for learning and implementing the practices of diversity and also for self-healing.
