Comment/Description

Immigrant, soldier, intellectual, politician - Alexander Hamilton is one of the great but forgotten founding fathers of the United States. Until 2015, that is. That year, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton: An American Musical premiered Off-Broadway, and has since been showered with international critical acclaim. The musical narrows in on the time of the American Revolution up until the founding of the US government through one of its key figures, Hamilton. And it does so from the perspective of the US today, with an all BIPoC cast and rap battles.

This seminar will consider the Blockbuster musical from three angles: Gender, race, and the US American nation as envisioned from the perspectives of the historical figure Alexander Hamilton and actor, songwriter, and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda. We will consider the time of the US American Revolution and the ratification of the Constitution, the musical's rewriting of history, the (alleged) reimagination of gender and race tropes at Broadway, up to the musical's political reverberations today.
