Kommentar/Beschreibung

Since becoming a viral phenomenon in 2017, #MeToo has profoundly shaped public conversations about sexualized violence, gender, power, and accountability. Yet the movement neither began with the hashtag nor has its impact been distributed equally. This seminar approaches #MeToo as both a social movement and a cultural and media phenomenon, asking how experiences of sexualized violence become visible, narratable, and believable, and whose voices and experiences remain marginalized in these processes.

Focusing primarily on U.S. media and culture while incorporating transnational perspectives, we will examine the different media ecosystems through which #MeToo has developed and been contested. Topics include investigative journalism and She Said (2022), marginalization, networked feminism, testimony and credibility, queer approaches to sexualized violence, and #MeToo within celebrity and popular culture. Winnie M Li’s novel Complicit (2022) will allow us to explore institutional complaint, affect, and trauma. We will also consider feminist responses that extend beyond speaking out, including the 4B movement, celibacy, and practices of feminist refusal.
Finally, the seminar turns to the changing cultural and legal landscape of the post-#MeToo and post-Dobbs United States. Through recent publicly scrutinized cases involving Amber Heard and Blake Lively, we will examine how digital narratives, platform cultures, and popular understandings of legality shape contemporary judgments about gendered violence and credibility. Throughout, we will ask: Who can speak, who is heard, who is believed,—and who profits from it?

First session on 12 October, 2026, will be held digitally via BigBlueButton.
