Kommentar/Beschreibung

Welcome! Rewrites proliferate in Anglophone literature. This class focusses on one particular aspect of this striking surge of retellings, namely specifically feminist rewrites. We will begin by determining what a rewrite is and what exactly makes it feminist. As we will see, such retellings typically question traditional gender roles and give female characters greater agency, complexity, and equality. Among other things, we will try to determine the intertextual relations between the original and the rewrite to discuss the use of different narrative strategies as well as the ideological ramifications that are generated. We will read and discuss Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966); some of the rewritten fairy tales in Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber (1979); Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad (2005); and Madeline Miller’s Circe (2018). We will also try to classify these prose narratives in terms of literary history and relate them to concepts like postmodernism and post-postmodernism. In this seminar, I will again and again propose topics for final theses (Master’s thesis and WHA). Furthermore, you can use the seminar as one of the topics for your oral or written Staatsexamen.
