Studienbereiche/Modulzuordnungen

Lehrveranstaltungskommentar

The increasingly international orientation of academia in general requires students to be able to write academic texts in English – a requirement that is difficult to fulfil successfully without the support of university writing courses characteristic of English-speaking countries. To fill this gap, this course is designed for students from all disciplines with little to no experience with academic writing who need to write academic texts in English in their study programs or are planning to study in an English-speaking country. The course addresses the basic concerns of academic writing in English (such as understanding writing assignments, paragraphing, and paraphrasing) and encourages you to develop your own writing skills in practice. You will also receive regular feedback on your written texts.

By the end of this course, you will be able to…

• … identify common structures of different kinds of academic texts and structure your own texts accordingly.
• … identify and use the basic terminology of academic disciplines.
• … find a research topic as well as draft research questions and theses statements.
• … outline a research paper’s argumentation.
• … work with sources effectively (for example evaluating, summarizing, referencing).
• … apply the specificities of academic writing in English in your own texts.

As the development of writing skills requires frequent practice, this course is offered as a regular course over the whole term. Please be prepared to complete several writing tasks for this course during and after the semester as, in order to receive credit (CP), you will need to complete a writing portfolio.

Kindly note that this course will be conducted in English. Participants will need at least level B1+ or equivalent in English to complete the course. However, this course is not designed to improve your English language skills. If you are looking for a course to improve your grammar, vocabulary etc, please refer to the English language courses offered by the Forum Sprachen.

Participants will receive a pass/fail, 2 CP are awarded for the successful completion of the course.
