Comment/Description

“Queer” has meant different things at different times and to different people,’ writes Bo Ruberg (2019: 7), speaking to the multi-layered and shifting qualities of “queerness” or “being queer.” As medial representation(s) of queer, trans, and non-binary characters increase, formerly dominant tropes become challenged and re-define how experiences beyond the cis, heterosexual norm is depicted. From Torrey Peter’s Detransition, Baby (2021) to Sam Levison’s Euphoria (2019-present) to Elliot Page’s public coming out, this course surveys contemporary depictions of queers in media, analyzes how queers use media, and examine how media may be queered.
