Comment/Description

This seminar aims to explore how war, love, and friendship are narrated in the American lyrical and musical tradition. For this, we will discuss under which premises song lyrics can(not) be categorized as literature, assess which medial artifacts (music, literature, film, etc.) have shaped your concept of war, and how war is narrated across different musical genres within the American song tradition, various approaches to narrating love and friendship including the description of heterosexual, queer, and platonic relationships, as well as an outlook on the narration of war, love, and friendship beyond the American tradition.

As this seminar centers on the discussion of songs and song lyrics as literature, there is no need to purchase any primary literature in preparation for this course. However, with the course being taught in four sessions, students are expected to fulfill regular course attendance, active in-class participation, and submission of assignments in preparation for the respective session. Additionally, participants are asked to ensure access to appropriate listening devices for individual work sessions and in-class group assignments (e.g. smartphone, laptop or tablet with internet access, and some type of headphones).

Some of the songs we will be discussing include but are not limited to Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969): Fortunate Son, The Police (1983): Every Breath You Take, The Rembrandts (1995): I'll Be There for You, Vitamin C (1999): Friends Forever, The Chicks [Former: Dixie Chicks] (2002): Travelin' Soldier, Avenged Sevenfold (2005): M.I.A, Rise Against (2008): Hero of War, Sabaton (2010): Primo Victoria, Mitski (2013): Strawberry Blond, mgk [Also known as: Machine Gun Kelly] (2020): Bloody Valentine.

Relevant primary and secondary literature will be uploaded to Stud.IP.

Deadline for term paper submission: 15 September 2024.
